What is Illustration
Illustration is creating an image to communicate a message or an idea. Illustration can be done in any medium as long as it is a visual representation of something. Examples of where you might find illustration might be in picture books, advertising, magazines, newspapers, instruction manuals, posters for gigs or movies, products like T-shirts or greeting cards and even in fashion and film.
An illustrator is responsible for taking an idea and turning it into something visual. An illustrator will often work with a client like a writer for a book and produce character designs like the sloth character on the left or storyboard illustration, where the storyboard artist is in charge of drawing out the scenes for a TV Show or Movie. It's like a super power. If you want to see a cow wearing a speedo, sipping on a White Russian while drifting on a canoe, an illustrator can draw it for you and then you will know! BOOM!
There are a lot of different types of illustrators out there that cater to particular areas of illustration and have their own personal aesthetic.
Most illustrators are adaptable and can morph their drawing approach into the aesthetic that would suit your project. However, it is a good idea to do your research and identify an illustrator that suits your needs visually .
